Piragal Thiru and Premier Kathleen Wynne welcome hundreds of supporters at Campaign Office Opening
Scarborough—Rouge River Liberal by-election candidate Piragal Thiru celebrated the grand opening of his campaign office today with special guest Premier Kathleen Wynne and hundreds of supporters from the community. Joined by Michael Chan, MPP Markham—Unionville, Mitzie Hunter, MPP Scarborough—Guildwood, and other Liberal representatives and community leaders, Thiru addressed the diverse supporters and was given an honorary Chinese name during a naming ceremony. The name, Tian Rui was chosen for Thiru’s dedication to grassroots activism.
“We know that Scarborough needs a strong voice at Queen’s Park, but more than that, Scarborough needs a representative who understands the concerns of this unique community,” said Thiru. “Like many here, Scarborough was my family’s first home when we arrived in Canada. I am here today because of the strength of this community. I want to help build Scarborough up and ensure we have access to the transit, health care and economic opportunities we need to grow and flourish.”
Premier Wynne addressed the crowd at the launch, highlighting Thiru’s expertise as transit planner and how his experience and his story makes him uniquely qualified to be Scarborough Rouge River’s next MPP.
“Piragal’s life is a true Scarborough success story,” Premier Wynne said. “Piragal came to Ontario as a refugee and went on to become a grassroots leader and community builder. Piragal is the kind of leader Scarborough needs at Queen’s Park to work with us to bring high-speed transit, investments in health care and greater retirement security to this community.”
As a city builder, transit expert and grassroots community organizer, Piragal wants to put his experience to work for the people of Scarborough — to give back to the community that first welcomed him as a New Canadian and help it thrive for commuters, for families and for seniors.
